Transitioning Our Daughter from Crib to Big Girl Bed

Transitioning Our Daughter from Crib to Big Girl Bed

With a new baby on the way this October, it was time for a big milestone in our house—helping our two-year-old transition from her crib to her very own big girl bed.

As a mom, I had two priorities in mind: safety and comfort. I knew she’d likely tumble out a few times in the beginning, so I wanted a bed close to the ground. That’s one of the reasons we chose the Mesa Daybed—its low-to-the-ground design made me feel confident she’d be safe during those first few nights.

I also loved the style of the Mesa Daybed. Its cheerful, airy look matches her sunny little personality perfectly. And since it’s handcrafted from solid, toxin-free poplar wood, I know it will last her for years to come (even beyond the toddler stage!).

Here’s how we made the transition a smooth and positive experience:

1. Let Her Help Build the Mesa Daybed 🛠️

We made the Mesa Daybed part of the excitement by letting her help “build” it. Once it was in her room, she loaded it up with her favorite stuffed animals and helped me decorate around it. That sense of ownership made her proud and eager to sleep in it.

2. Start with Naptime on the Mesa Daybed 🌙

Our first try was during nap. We followed our normal routine (sleep sack, stuffed animals, and sound machine), but instead of her crib, I laid her down in the Mesa Daybed.

There were some tears, but because it’s a twin-size bed, I was able to snuggle next to her until she felt calm.

We snuggled for a few minutes. Then, I watched her on the monitor to make sure she didn't try to get out of bed on her own.

She actually fell asleep! That short, daytime introduction made the idea of bedtime in her new bed much less intimidating.

3. Transition to Nighttime 🛏️

That evening, she resisted a little at first, but since she had already napped in the Mesa Daybed, it wasn’t brand new anymore. We followed the same routine.

Each night got easier, and before long, she was proud to say, “This is my big girl bed!”

Now, she absolutely loves the Mesa Daybed. She hasn’t fallen out (huge win!) and she excitedly climbs in on her own. For us, the Mesa Daybed wasn’t just a safe, sturdy choice—it became part of a happy family milestone.
